2022 is the start of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032). Our latest issue of the Cultural Survival Quarterly ([link removed]) magazine is dedicated to uplifting the voices and work of Indigenous educators, practitioners, linguists, activists, journalists, and communicators, who, against all odds, with limited to no resources, are strengthening their mother tongues and creating new language speakers through various media platforms and tools.
Along with his business partner and wife, Cirila Trejo Gonzales, Julio and his family of artists put their hearts and souls into their work. Their art has a rich history and is deeply connected to the local community and the nature that surrounds it. The papel amate is made from tree bark harvested by community members who transport the materials to the artists. Julio says that healers were the first to work with the tree bark, making it into small sheets as a way to wrap and store the medicines they prescribed to heal community members. Both the inspiration and materials for Julio’s creations are gathered from the natural environment and transformed into true works of art.
The most critical measure of language revitalization is the creation of new speakers, and this, along with securing adequate funding, needs to be the focus of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages. How do we channel funding to grassroots community language efforts? Join the conversation.

2022 es el inicio del Decenio Internacional de las Lenguas Indígenas (2022-2032). Nuestra última edición de Cultural Survival Quarterly está dedicado a elevar las voces y el trabajo de los educadores, practicantes, lingüistas, activistas, periodistas y comunicadores Indígenas, quienes contra viento y marea, con recursos limitados o nulos, están fortaleciendo sus lenguas maternas y creando nuevos hablantes de idiomas a través de diversas plataformas y herramientas de comunicación.
La medida más crítica de la revitalización del idioma es la creación de nuevos hablantes, y esto, junto con el financimiento adecuado, debe ser el centro de atención del Decenio Internacional de las Lenguas Indígenas. ¿Cómo canalizamos los fondos hacia los esfuerzos linguísticos de base de las comunidades? ¡Únase a la conversación!
