[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

Friends -

My Senate colleagues and I are about to force a debate and vote on voting rights and what it will take to pass this legislation.

The bill up for consideration is the Freedom to Vote Act. Every single Democratic senator supports it. It was intended to be a bipartisan compromise bill to guarantee the right to vote and have that vote counted. In the past, this would be the kind of legislation that Republicans would support in a functioning Senate.

People deserve to know where their senators stand when it comes to voting rights. Will they do everything they can to save democracy and this sacred constitutional right, or will they allow the tyranny of the minority to block any reform?

Before we vote, I need your help to up the pressure on my colleagues. Will you add your name to tell my Democratic Senate colleagues to use any tool necessary to pass voting rights legislation — even if it means changing the filibuster rules?

The status quo in this country is broken, and our democracy is being attacked from within by one of our major political parties.

Just last week, Democratic senators universally were putting out statements proclaiming their belief in democracy and condemning what happened on January 6th.

This week, it is time to answer the question, which should not be tough, about what they will actually do to preserve democracy.

The truth is, this is legislation that historically would have received nearly universal support in Congress. But the Republican Party has given up on democracy. They believe their path back to power is dependent on fewer people voting.

The future of democracy is now in the hands of 100 people in the U.S. Senate. And it’s about damn time we pass legislation that protects voting rights and safeguards free and fair elections.

Add your name to tell my Democratic colleagues to pass the Freedom to Vote Act — even if it requires us to change the filibuster rules. We cannot allow a Jim Crow relic that threatens democracy to stand in our way.

Thank you in advance for making your voice heard.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
