John, our jail systems aren’t working.
Millions of people across the U.S. are languishing behind bars every day. In 2021 sixteen people died in New York City Jails, including the Rikers Island Jail Complex, and over 12,500 individuals are held in inhumane conditions in Los Angeles County’s jail systems, including L.A.’s notorious Men’s Central Jail. We must act now to decarcerate jails and save lives.
Add your name to demand officials close inhumane jails.
The Vera Institute of Justice is working to end the jail crisis across the U.S. by:
-
Organizing with advocacy partners and allied policymakers to demand New York City’s leaders decarcerate Rikers Island and permanently close the jail there.
-
Organizing with partners to close Men’s Central Jail, reduce the L.A. Jail population by one-third, and encourage the County to prioritize a care-first, community-oriented approach.
-
Working to prevent the creation of new jails in New Orleans and with the New Orleans Parish Sheriff's office to prioritize community support.
Act now to end the jail crisis.
People behind bars are living in dangerous and inhumane circumstances. We can’t wait until the next death to take action.
Join us and demand public officials decarcerate and close broken jails and prevent new jails from being built across the U.S.
In solidarity,
The Vera Institute of Justice
