Friend,
Yesterday, President Biden delivered remarks in Atlanta to elevate the urgent push for federal voting-rights protections. Now, it’s time for him to deliver results.
In his speech, the president finally endorsed Senate rules reforms fighting back against relentless Republican obstruction. With his support for a voting rights “carve-out” on the filibuster, this could be a turning point in our efforts to safeguard the right to vote and save our democracy.
This comes just after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to bring filibuster reform to a Senate vote by January 17. These next few days will be pivotal in the movement for voting rights. Can we count on you to speak out?
Act now: Urge your senators to reform the filibuster so we can save our democracy from extreme voter suppression.
Let’s be clear — Senate Democrats have the power to change and even abolish the filibuster. The filibuster did not exist when the Senate was first established, and in recent decades it’s been modified 161 times.
In 2017, Mitch McConnell amended the filibuster so he could pack the Supreme Court — allowing Trump to install three extreme justices with lifetime terms. If the GOP can make an exception to the filibuster to fill the judiciary with right-wing judges, why can’t Democrats do so to protect all Americans’ voting rights?
Critical pieces of legislation like the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act have already passed the House of Representatives — it’s the filibuster, and Senate Democrats unwilling to do what’s right, that’s stopping them from becoming law.
The Democratic majority in Congress was elected to pass popular, necessary legislation to make Americans’ lives better. The filibuster is an antiquated, anti-democratic tool to hold back that progress, and it must be removed. We can’t afford to waste any more time.
Write to your senators: Reform the filibuster so we can finally pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
Thank you,
