** Hello Southern Colorado and House District 62,
------------------------------------------------------------

First off, I want to say that it is truly an honor to serve the people of House District 62 in Southern Colorado.

I hope those reading had a happy holiday and a Merry Christmas!

Today kicks off the 2nd session of the 73rd General Session at the State Capitol!

My main goals this year are to make sure that Southern Colorado gets representation at the State Capitol. Through supporting our agriculture industry, upgrading rural broadband, increasing access to alternative energy sources, and making prescription drugs more affordable, we can make Colorado a better place to live.

Representative Donald Valdez hard at work.

In today’s opening proceedings, the Speaker of the House laid out key priorities for the Colorado House of Representatives. I applaud his commitment to cutting costs, improving education, and investing in public safety. These overarching goals will guide much of this year’s legislation.

I also support the Speaker’s efforts to help serve rural Colorado.

As Speaker Garnett said in his speech today,

“But this year, as high costs of living continue to tighten their grip on the budgets of families in Alamosa, Denver, and Larimer County alike, it won’t be enough to cooperate on just ‘some’ of these solutions.”

Passing important legislation into law this session will not be easy but I am ready and excited to continue to fight for rural Colorado and the citizens of House District 62.

Also in the district

During the interim session, I have been working directly to help the people of district 62 through town halls, committee meetings, and visiting my community.

I held a town hall with Xcel energy last week to help people learn more about the recent blackout. I listened to the community about the impact of the blackout and the actions taken by Xcel energy. Creating clear plans for disasters like the Marshall fire and making sure a fire like that doesn’t affect Colorado like it did is very important to me. We need to look into an alternative transmission line into the San Luis Valley for electricity needs for our home's and businesses.

As a member of the interim Capital Development Committee, I reviewed funding for capital development projects. I’m committed to improving our state institutions so Coloradans have the tools needed to succeed.

In addition to the official duties as a Representative, I was glad for the opportunity to spend time in the district meeting constituents, attending Adams State University commencement, and attending the Sierra Grande ribbon cutting of their new K-12 facilities last year.

I sit on the House Agriculture, Livestock and Water, along with Local Government and Transportation Committees.

Please email me with any issue or concern that you might have at [email protected] or call us (303)-866-2916.

Thank you and it is an Honor to serve Southern Colorado.

Representative Donald Valdez
