** In Memory of Sheldon Adelson, z"l

This week marks the first anniversary of the passing of a legend in the pro-Israel community.

Sheldon Adelson began life from the most humble of roots. He and his family grew up in a two-room apartment in Dorchester, Massachusetts. At the age of 12, he borrowed $200 from an uncle to be able to sell newspapers from a Boston street corner. The son of two immigrants - his father a Ukranian-Lithuanian Jew, and his mother a British Jew - he was often beaten up for being Jewish.

Sheldon took that fighting spirit into the commercial world and became one of America’s top billionaires. However, he never forgot where he came from, and used a great deal of his financial resources to help Israel and the Jewish people. Sheldon was always an ardent Zionist and a passionate defender of Israel’s right to exist.

Sheldon and his wife, Miriam, have used their enormous wealth to help fund a variety of philanthropic projects dealing with medical research, addiction, Israeli aerospace industries, American military veteran organizations and organizations such as EMET, that promote strong U.S.-Israel ties.

Sheldon’s extraordinary life was like a classic rags-to-riches fairytale. We will forever be profoundly grateful to him, and to his wonderful wife, Miriam, for giving EMET the encouragement and support that they showed us, particularly in our early years. Sheldon was not only a passionate Zionist, he was also an American patriot. He is profoundly missed by all who knew him.
