Just as it was used to stall civil rights legislation in the 1950s and 60s, the filibuster is currently employed by Republicans to restrict voting rights.

If existing Senate rules remain in place, the filibuster will only continue to embolden Republicans’ attacks on our democracy, blocking the passage of pivotal voting rights legislation.

For years, we have argued to abolish the filibuster, as it allows Republicans to halt progressive legislation. With President Biden’s recent speech endorsing changes to Senate laws, however, there is finally a chance to make actionable change

In his speech in Atlanta, President Biden called for a filibuster “carve out” in regards to voting rights, noting a need to end Republican’s “repeated obstruction.” With this change to Senate laws enacted, Democrats could enact new voting rights protections this year.

Biden’s endorsement has given momentum to our movement against the filibuster. Now, more than ever, we need to stand with Biden, showing our support for defending voting rights.
