Historic climate action, environmental protection, and democracy reform ? it's all possible? ? ? ? Friend,

At LCV, we have big goals for 2022 ? but big goals aren't enough. It takes bold action to make progress, a relentless drive to push legislation over the finish line, and the power of a united movement to spark the kind of change we need.

Friend, we need you with us if we're going to meet the urgency of the climate crisis and take meaningful action before it's too late. Today, I'm sharing with you our organization's top priorities for the year, so you can be ready to do your part when it matters most.

Secure historic climate progress It's never been more clear: we're in a climate crisis, and the costs of inaction are catastrophic. With the Build Back Better Act through the House and in final negotiations in the Senate, we are so close to historic climate progress. We continue to work to make sure that the final Build Back Better Act passes with climate investments that help cut United States carbon pollution in half (from 2005 levels) by 2030. Right now, you can take action and tell your Senators to pass a Build Back Better Act with strong climate provisions [link removed].

Once passed, it will be critical to ensure that at least 40 percent of these transformational investments go to Black and Brown communities who bear a disproportionate share of the burden of pollution and climate impacts. Every person deserves access to clean water, clean air, and a safe environment they need to stay healthy and thrive. Through this new policy, we can begin to reverse a legacy of environmental injustice and racism.

Protect our environment and communities With environmental champions in the White House, it's essential that we continue fighting to make sure our public lands serve our needs, not polluters, and that everyone, no matter their race or income, lives in a healthy community with clean air and water.

We will continue to work with the Biden-Harris administration and Congress to dramatically scale up protections for public lands and waters, so we can reach a goal of protecting 30% of the United States' land and ocean by 2030, prioritizing landscapes that are important to Indigenous nations and people of color and that reduce disparities in access to nature.

Defend and strengthen our democracy We can't have a healthy environment without a healthy democracy where every voice is heard and every vote is fairly counted. But right now, due to right-wing disinformation and state-level efforts to disenfranchise voters of color, the future of our democracy is in peril.

In the face of these threats, we're expanding our work to defend and strengthen democracy in 2022 by working at the federal, state, and local levels to advocate for just and equitable voting laws and to elevate democracy issues in the media to fight back against deception and misinformation. We will continue to encourage the Biden-Harris administration to take actions to secure our elections and safeguard the votes of communities of color targeted by disenfranchisement attacks.

Elect environmental champions None of this change is possible without pro-environment leaders in national, state, and local offices ? and 2022's Congressional and state elections will be pivotal. Through the LCV Victory Fund and LCV Action Fund, LCV's affiliated political entities, as well as our state league partners, we aim to create, defend, and expand ? especially racially diverse ? pro-environment and pro-democracy majorities in Congress and champions at all levels of government.

It will be essential that we do all we can to re-elect House members and senators who vote for transformative climate action, as well as to preserve the leadership that will have made its passage possible. As in past years, our work to elect environmental champions will cover a range of tactics including field, digital, television, mail, radio, phones, and texting. We will also invest in robust research projects to understand where our messaging resonates best and where our investments can be most impactful, and continue and expand efforts to engage voters of color.

Hold our leaders accountable Next Month, we'll release our annual National Environmental Scorecard, [link removed] the primary yardstick for evaluating the environmental records of members of Congress. Each member will be graded on how their votes advanced environmental progress, democracy, and racial justice.

Every bit of our plan is possible. To be honest, every part of it is necessary. And it will take our collective strength and commitment to make it happen.

Still, it's important to be realistic. None of these victories will come easy. We're facing polluters with deep pockets and corporations with a lot of power. We must hold accountable politicians who are in denial about climate change and hostile to the very idea of conservation.

But continuing to build a powerful movement of conservation voters is what it's going to take to confront the climate crisis. This is the work of undoing a legacy of environmental racism. This is what we owe future generations and to each other.

Together, we can get it done. Thank you for your ongoing support, and for helping to advance the progress we need. We're counting on you every step of the way.

Onward,

Gene Karpinski
