Hi John,
Climate change is already harming our nation’s health and economy, fueling extreme weather events that threaten the lives of hundreds of thousands. That’s why it’s critical that our leaders tackle one of the largest sources of climate pollution – methane, which has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere.
Right now, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering new rules that will immediately reduce climate pollution by targeting oil and gas facilities and urging them to regularly find and fix leaks that emit this potent greenhouse gas into our atmosphere.
This change will not only protect our environment, but also address pollution that is linked to cancer, asthma and other illnesses. The EPA is ready to adopt world class emission standards that will reduce air pollution across the U.S. from new and existing oil and gas sites, but they need to hear from you first.
Submit a public comment to the EPA today and show your support for new standards that better protect our environment, economy and health.
This historic proposal will cut methane pollution from thousands of oil and gas facilities, protecting the health of millions of Americans in the process. If adopted nearly 1 million older, pre-existing oil and gas wells will fall under federal oversight — here’s how EPA’s proposal protects us:
- Extends regulations to cover existing sources of methane pollution. The standards for the first time extend to the hundreds of thousands of older facilities nationwide that are responsible for the vast majority of methane emissions, allowing states to develop implementation plans to help drive down pollution.
- Deploys zero-emitting technology to the field. EPA’s proposal incorporates protective standards for pneumatic controllers — devices at oil and gas sites that can emit significant levels of pollution — requiring them to be zero-emitting. This low cost solution will decrease methane emissions by 19 million tons by 2035, the climate equivalent of taking over 300 million cars off of the road for a year.
- Increases screening requirements and inspections. EPA is proposing to allow operators to survey sites using advanced methods already deployed by leaders in the industry. By screening more frequently and using more advanced methods, we could reduce fugitive emissions by 80-90%!
- Ensures community participation throughout the implementation process. EPA plans to require that states identify underserved communities and seek their input during regulatory processes, underscoring the administration’s commitment to environmental justice.
While EPA's proposed methane safeguards are an important step in the right direction, they still must be strengthened in order to protect communities on the frontlines of oil and gas development, and confront the climate crisis head-on.
That’s why we need you to show your support and encourage the EPA to improve upon this proposal and the most comprehensive methane safeguards possible. Only then will the U.S. be able to reign in methane waste from oil and gas companies and hold polluters accountable.
We cannot miss out on this opportunity to cut methane pollution, safeguard public health, and act on climate. Show your support for this game changing rule and help the EPA lead on climate action.
Thank you for meeting the methane moment,
Wes Rogerson
