Winning changes that better the lives of New Yorkers starts with listening to New Yorkers.

That’s why this fall, I partnered with researcher Dr. John Mollenkopf at the CUNY Center for Urban Research to get a better idea of how New Yorkers feel about our city and our government.

The findings of this survey, released last week, were consistent with what I heard on the campaign trail and on our listening tour last fall:

  • New Yorkers love their neighborhoods and remain deeply committed to our city despite the tough couple of years we’ve had.
  • New Yorkers are concerned about the high cost of housing, public safety and crime, and problems with public transportation.
  • New Yorkers want more investment in stable and affordable housing, mental health services and outreach, services to get unhoused people off of the street, and job opportunities for young people.

This survey is a vital first step in making sure that all New Yorkers are heard and served by their government. Listen to my conversation about our findings with WNYC's Brian Lehrer here.

While in office, I plan to consistently ask New Yorkers what they think about city services through surveys, focus groups, town halls and other public engagement processes. All New Yorkers have a stake in our city’s future — and should have a voice in shaping it. Through continued outreach and engagement, we hope to include you in making sure local government delivers the public services, opportunities, and infrastructure that we all need to thrive in the years to come.

With hope,

Brad
