Dear Colleague,

Happy New Year! This year’s first issue ([link removed]) of the Clearinghouse’s quarterly research digest ([link removed]) covers articles published from 1 October to 31 December 2021. The digest provides abstracts of articles from the peer-reviewed literature on male circumcision, with a focus on voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) for HIV prevention.

Links are provided to either the abstract online or the full text of articles that are open access. For additional information on VMMC, search the Clearinghouse’s Resource Library ([link removed]) .

Featured Articles
* A cohort study ([link removed]) among initially uncircumcised, HIV-negative men in Rakai, Uganda, found that the effectiveness of VMMC for HIV prevention in a real-world setting was consistent with the efficacy shown in clinical trials and was sustained over time.
* The results of a modelling study ([link removed]) suggest that the benefits of continuing to provide VMMC and other key HIV services during the COVID-19 pandemic are far greater than the risks of additional transmission of COVID-19.

* An economic evaluation ([link removed]) of an intervention designed to increase the uptake of VMMC among men ages 25–49 at a clinic in South Africa showed that the intervention led to statistically significant cost savings per individual enrolled.

Other abstracts featured in the digest address the potential for VMMC research to generate health gains, the effects of an extracurricular, school-based HIV prevention intervention, ways to reduce already low rate of complications after VMMC in Namibia and Zimbabwe, and health care providers’ knowledge of VMMC and other HIV prevention measures in Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zambia.

Best regards,

Clearinghouse Webmaster
