Hi John,
20 years ago today, the first 20 prisoners arrived at Guantánamo Bay. To this day, none of them have ever been charged in the 9/11 attacks — a microcosm of the lawlessness of U.S. foreign policy.
Our country’s foreign policy has caused untold suffering across the world. In Afghanistan today, our sanctions are causing mass starvation and the imminent possible death of millions of Afghans.
Foreign policy is a topic that tends to be a weakness among anti-establishment candidates, but I grew up overseas and have lived, worked, and studied in seven countries. Like most progressives, I support Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and housing for all. I also support a humane foreign policy that would stop:
1. Sanctions on Afghanistan that are causing mass starvation. 2. Military assistance and the U.S. sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia — and our support of the brutal war in Yemen. 3. Covert regime change, such as the assassination of the president of Haiti, which one of the assassination plotters and financers said had the “full support of the United States,” as the New York Times reported yesterday. 4. Funding of militias on both sides of the Syrian war (which has led to the absurd situation of militias armed by different parts of the U.S. military-industrial complex fighting each other on the battlefield). 5. Regime change wars conducted for the purpose of resource extraction and enrichment of U.S. corporations and elites.
