Hi —

I have great news! Governor Wolf vetoed a Senate resolution that would have hindered Pennsylvania’s ability to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a program that will help address the climate crisis by putting a price tag on pollution and investing millions of dollars into improving public health.

Having to pay to pollute isn’t popular with Big Polluters, and delay tactics like the disapproval resolution vetoed yesterday show just how hard they are working to make sure that doesn’t happen.

We’re thankful to leaders like Governor Wolf who deflect these kinds of roadblocks to climate progress, so let’s make sure he hears loud and clear that Pennsylvanians across the state applaud his action.

Not only will RGGI cut carbon pollution by as much as 227 million tons in PA, but estimates show that it would generate a net increase of more than 27,000 jobs — many of them sustainable, clean energy jobs. Plus will add nearly $2 billion to the state’s economy by 2030. In terms of public health, RGGI will prevent 639 premature deaths and mean 30,000 fewer hospital visits in Pennsylvania.

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again: RGGI is our best shot at addressing climate change, helping workers, and creating resilient communities, and a majority of Pennsylvanians support it. If we’re ever going to reduce our carbon emissions in the very small window that’s left to stave off the catastrophic rise in global temperatures and extreme weather events — which we’re already seeing in the 20 separate billion-dollar climate and weather disasters the U.S. has been battered by in 2021 alone [1] — Pennsylvania has got to change course and join this critical program without any further delay.

Governor Wolf’s action yesterday means we’re one step closer to a cleaner and healthier future for our children and grandchildren. Thank him for vetoing a resolution that would have delayed the state from realizing the pollution reductions, job creation opportunities, and economic development offered by RGGI [[link removed]]

Thanks for all that you do.
