President Biden knows just how urgent the fight for voting rights is, so, according to Politico, he came to “the belly of the beast” — otherwise known as our home state of Georgia. Everyone who has followed Carolyn’s story knows how important voting rights and voter protection have been in her races for Congress, and how passionate she is about reforms.

Now, she is meeting the president on his trip to Atlanta to urge him to bring the power of his office to bear on passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and for the Freedom to Vote Act.

We all know that Republicans won’t support these bills — because Republicans in Georgia and many across the country have decided that the only way to win is by making it harder for people of color to vote.

What this means is that the president and the Democrats in the US Senate must stand up to create a carve-out in the filibuster to pass voting rights. They simply won’t find Republicans who will come to the table to help. Certainly, Republicans in Georgia didn’t wait for Democrats when they passed restrictive voting laws, including ones that allow the partisan takeover of local boards of elections.

The reality is that the GOP would rather push their conspiracy theories and block voters from accessing the ballot box than win over the hearts and minds of Georgians.

Carolyn worked with her colleagues in the House to pass comprehensive voting rights legislation, but Republicans have blocked it — THREE TIMES.

Enough is enough. It’s time to pass comprehensive voting rights legislation and provide every voter with their constitutional right to participate in our democracy.
