John,
My name is John Fetterman. As you probably know, I’m running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, and I’m honored that No Dem Left Behind has endorsed me in the primary.
Before I ask for your support, I want to take a minute to introduce myself and tell you a few things you might not know from the media’s coverage of me as the “big, bearded, tattooed guy” running for Senate.
I’m currently serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania after having spent 13 years as mayor of Braddock, a small town 15 minutes outside of Pittsburgh.
I grew up solidly middle-class in York, the son of two teenage parents. When they were just starting out, we didn’t have much, but my dad worked nights when I was a kid so he could put himself through college, and eventually became the owner of a successful small business. He’s the one who taught me the value of getting an education.
When I graduated high school, I was lucky enough to attend the same college my dad did, Albright College (being 6’8” and good at football helped). Several years later, I earned a master’s in Public Policy from Harvard.
But it’s what happened in between those two things that really set the course of my life.
When I was 23, I joined Big Brothers/Big Sisters. My “little” was an 8-year-old boy who had just lost his dad to AIDS, and his mother was also battling the disease. Before she died, I promised her I’d look out for her son and make sure he graduated from college. Thanks to my “little’s” hard work and perseverance, I’m proud to say I kept that promise.
That experience lit a fire inside me. I joined up with AmeriCorps and served in Pittsburgh’s historic Hill District, where I helped set up the first computer labs in the neighborhood and taught GED classes to young mothers and fathers.
After getting my master’s degree, I came back to Pennsylvania and started a GED program in the town of Braddock, a once-thriving steel town that had since become one of the poorest and most challenged communities in the Commonwealth. In 2005, encouraged by my students, I ran for mayor. I won that first race by only a single vote, but worked hard to prove myself and won re-election two more times.
I’m damn proud of the work I did as mayor of Braddock. My team and I worked hard to rebuild the community, creating jobs, getting youth engaged, and bringing creative urban policy solutions to our town. Today, Braddock has a community center, urban gardens, and a free store run by my beautiful, smart, and talented wife, Gisele.
In 2016, I ran for U.S. Senate to confront the inequality crisis at the highest level of government. I knew it was a longshot, but I surprised everyone with a strong showing, earning 20 percent of the vote in a 4-way race.
Two years later, I ran to be Pennsylvania’s Lieutenant Governor, and this time I won big , coming in first in a 5-way primary and going on to win the general on Tom Wolf’s ticket with a nearly 18% margin in a swing state .
As Lt. Governor, I’ve made it a point to be more than just a yes-man to the Governor – I’ve made a bully pulpit of the office, pushing for real change even when it means challenging my boss.
Just weeks after taking office, I launched a listening tour of all 67 counties in the Commonwealth to engage with Pennsylvanians about legalizing marijuana. In 3 months, more than 10,000 people showed up to in person to the first-of-its-kind tour, and tens of thousands more participated online.
Afterward, when I brought my findings and recommendations to the Governor, he announced his support for legalization for the first time.
I want to bring that same fire and passion to the U.S. Senate to challenge injustice at the highest levels of government and push our leaders to make real change.
This period of the Democratic primary is *very* important. We must show as much early momentum as possible, and how much money we raise is a big part of that. I have to ask.
Can you pitch in today to join our united fight with a donation of any size to be split between No Dem Left Behind and our campaign? [[link removed]]
The campaign we build together is gonna be special and it’s gonna be big. All 67 counties. Every vote matters. No one taken for granted.
You know I will say on the campaign what I believe to be true. Always have. I’ve fought for the same things for the last 20 years, as Mayor of Braddock and now as Lieutenant Governor. I haven’t had to "evolve" over time on the issues.
No to: Special interests, inequality, injustice, corporate control, hacky partisan political maneuvering.
Yes to: Supporting our underserved rural communities, legal weed, LGBTQIA+ protection under law, the union way of life, second chances, raising the minimum wage, beating climate change. Oh yeah, and Sheetz. Always Sheetz.

When state law banned marriage equality, I officiated one of the first gay marriages in Pennsylvania. When Braddock was overlooked and counted out, I made sure our community was heard. When the Pennsylvania GOP sent the flag police to take down my weed and pride flags from the state capitol, I put them back up.
Aaaand…when the people of Pennsylvania demanded a Gritty statue made of butter, I got them a Gritty statue made of butter. 😆
John, if you’re in a place to do so, can you pitch in any amount between No Dem Left Behind and our campaign? What we raise during this period of the Democratic primary will set the tone for the rest of this race. [[link removed]]
