OUR LAST CHANCE TO TELL THE SENATE: NO DIRTY ENERGY IN THE BUILD BACK
BETTER ACT!

Dear GGJ members and supporters,
In December, coal baron Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia said on Fox
News that he opposed the Build Back Better Act, President Biden’s
landmark legislation that the lone senator has held up in negotiations.
After months of cutbacks and compromises, Manchin withholding his key vote
in an evenly divided Senate means the bill is now stalled.
TOGETHER, WE HAVE FOUGHT FOR SUBSTANTIAL FUNDING FOR CLIMATE, CARE, AND
JUSTICE, MAKING THIS ACT A ONCE-IN-A-GENERATION OPPORTUNITY TO DELIVER
TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE by uplifting communities across the United States,
creating sustainable jobs, and combating climate change. In the face of
overlapping climate crisis, raging pandemic, racial injustice, and economic
instability, frontline and fenceline communities urgently need a real
recovery.
Yet, the Build Back Better Act is just a first step toward the full scale
of economic transformation necessary to repair, invest in, and sustain our
communities. And significantly, a just economic recovery means THIS BILL
MUST DO NO HARM.
TELL THE SENATE NOW: NO DIRTY ENERGY IN THE BUILD BACK BETTER ACT [1]!
While the bill contains investments that will improve people’s lives, it
also invests in harmful energy technologies that will devastate frontline
communities. THIS DELAY OF THE BUILD BACK BETTER ACT IS A CRUCIAL TIME TO
DEMAND THE SENATE REMOVE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN HANDOUTS TO DIRTY ENERGY
CORPORATIONS IN THE FINAL VERSION OF THE BILL. These include incentives
for:
* Nuclear power production
* Biofuels, including funding for biofuel development and biomass power
plants
* Carbon Capture and Storage, including for coal, fracking, and enhanced
oil recovery projects
* Hydrogen power production that depends on fossil fuel energy
* Waste-to-energy production, which is incineration of municipal solid
waste that produces high levels of local pollution
Please join us in calling on the Senate to take a stand against dirty
energy. _WE MUST GET BUILD BACK BETTER ACROSS THE FINISH LINE, AND THE
STRONGEST VERSION OF THIS BILL WILL REMOVE DIRTY ENERGY INVESTMENTS. _SIGN

En diciembre, el Senador de West Virginia y magnate de carbón, Joe
Manchin, dijo en Fox News que se oponía a la Ley Reconstruir Mejor (la Ley
llamada “Build Back Better”), la legislación histórica del Presidente
Biden que este único Senador detuvo en las negociaciones. Tras meses de
recortes y concesiones, que Manchin retenga su voto clave en un Senado
parejamente dividido significa que ahora el proyecto de ley está detenido.
JUNTES, HEMOS VOTADO A FAVOR DE FONDOS SUBSTANCIALES PARA EL CLIMA, EL
CUIDADO Y LA JUSTICIA, HACIENDO DE ESTA LEY UNA OPORTUNIDAD ÚNICA EN
NUESTRA GENERACIÓN PARA CREAR CAMBIO TRANSFORMADOR al elevar comunidades
de todo Estados Unidos, crear trabajos sustentables y combatir el cambio
climático. Frente a las superpuestas crisis climática, pandemia
desenfrenada, injusticia racial e inestabilidad económica, las comunidades
en las primeras líneas y en los perímetros de las plantas urgentemente
necesitan una verdadera recuperación.
Aun así, la Ley Reconstruir Mejor es sólo un primer paso hacia la
transformación económica completa necesaria para reparar, invertir en y
sustentar a nuestras comunidades. Y significativamente, una recuperación
económica justa significa que ESTE PROYECTO DE LEY NO DEBE CAUSAR NINGÚN
DAÑO.
DÍGALE AL SENADO AHORA: ¡NINGUNA ENERGÍA SUCIA EN LA LEY RECONSTRUIR

Si bien el proyecto de ley contiene inversiones que mejorarán las vidas de
la gente, también invierte en tecnologías energéticas dañinas que
devastarán a las comunidades en primeras líneas. ESTE ATRASO DE LA LEY
RECONSTRUIR MEJOR ES UN TIEMPO CRUCIAL PARA EXIGIR QUE EL SENADO SAQUE
MILES DE MILLONES DE DÓLARES EN REGALOS A CORPORACIONES DE ENERGÍA SUCIA
DE LA VERSIÓN FINAL DEL PROYECTO DE LEY. Éstos incluyen incentivos para:
* Producción de energía nuclear
* Biocombustibles, incluyendo fondos para el desarrollo de biocombustibles
y plantas energéticas de biomasa
* Captura y alamacenamiento de carbono, incluyendo para los proyectos de
carbón, fracking y recuperación de petróleo mejorada
* Producción de energía a partir del hidrógeno que depende de la
energía obtenida con fósiles combustibles
* Producción de residuos-a-energía, es decir, incineración de basura
sólida municipal que produce altos niveles de contaminación local
