Nothing is more important than the right to vote. Not the filibuster. Not this particular policy or that. Nothing.

Protecting and expanding the right to vote is fundamental. It’s the foundational right upon which all others are built.

And it is precisely why so many Republicans — inspired by Trump’s Big Lie — are desperately trying to strip away the right to vote from so many. But for what exactly?

To gain more power? To promote the private interest of the wealthy? To cement permanent minority rule in response to our country’s changing demographics? To appease one man’s autocratic desires? To tear down our very democracy itself?

Ultimately there is no single answer to that question, but there is a solution: Congress, and especially holdouts in the Senate, must act, and act fast.

Already, we are seeing hundreds of bills to suppress the right to vote introduced around the country by Republican State Legislatures. We are seeing Republican governors and legislatures work to strip independent election officials of their power, and also position the legislature to overturn the results of the next presidential election if their candidate loses. And we are seeing an effort by Senate Republicans to block any meaningful response.

We cannot wait this out or hope it gets better. We just can’t. It requires all of the Democrats in the Senate, even those who represent red states, to find the courage to act, and act fast. Otherwise, I fear all may be lost.
