As in many other places in the nation, we’ve got problems - “right here in River City.” (Bonus points if you can name the musical that is from.) But I’m not giving up and neither are the many Iowans committed to equity, transparency, democracy and a better justice system.
My maternal ancestors are buried in Zearing, Iowa and my paternal ancestors, in the shadows of the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Des Moines’ east side. My roots run deep here and I will stand and fight.
We must double down on our work and stay focused on doing what’s right and not just what’s easy.
I’m running for Polk County Attorney, to create positive change and work for the justice system we want and need. One where we stop wasting resources by charging folks with low-level possession of marijuana. One where we invest in kids and keep them out of detention and prison and support them in getting back on track. One where we make sure all victims of crime feel heard and supported – and not just some victims of crime. One where we do all we can to prevent crime, rather than just waiting until it happens.
I can’t do this alone – we here in Iowa can’t do this alone, either. We need the support of Iowans plus allies throughout the nation. That’s why I’m asking for donations and volunteer time.
Donations, volunteer hours, shares and retweets will make the difference between winning this election - having the opportunity to make significant, meaningful positive changes to the justice system here – and watching that opportunity slip by.
Donations of any size make an impact, even if it is only just a couple bucks. If you’re able to donate a larger amount, great, and thank you! If you can’t donate, please share and retweet our social media posts and thank you for that! If you have an hour or two between now and June 7, please sign up for a volunteer shift – and thank you! It will take all hands on deck to pull off this win - and we can only do it together.
Let’s increase public safety through justice reform. The time is now.
