Help Pass Climate Legislation in Albany!
The 2022 Legislative Session has opened in Albany, and it will be a critical one for climate action in New York State. 350Brooklyn has joined with climate groups across the state to push for the passage of twelve good bills, including NY Renews' Climate and Community Protection Act. On January 25th, we're going to get the ball rolling. Sign up for the mobilization event here and see how you can help!

Vanessa Barrios of the Regional Planning Association talks about all this, plus car culture, and the role of racism in transportation. Listen to this and other episodes of 350Brooklyn's podcast series, Climate Check: Stories and Solutions, here.

Do You Write? A New Letter Writing and Op-Ed Group is Forming!
Do you like to write? Letters to the editor, op-eds, and letters to reporters influence stories that are being told about the climate crisis. 350BK would like to set up a group of members who respond to current news coverage, and help shape future coverage. Get in on the ground floor and help shape this project (for example, it needs a catchy name!). Interested? Email [email protected]
Climate Victory: Gowanus Repowering Project Withdrawn!
350Brooklyn, along with other climate justice organizations, has been waging a campaign for two years to stop the Gowanus Fracked Gas Plant. As of December 16th, 2021, the application to repower the Gowanus Plant has been withdrawn. Its parent company, Eastern Generation, has stated that it will close the Gowanus and Narrows plants, and will instead invest in battery storage of renewable energy. Company officials cited unnamed “obstacles” in statements to the press regarding this voluntary move. One clear obstacle is enforcement of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), as permits were also denied recently for power plants in Astoria and Newburgh. It is certain that persistent civil resistance against the fossil fuel industry by grassroots groups such as 350Brooklyn are proving effective. Bravo!
The Kids Say "Get It Done, Chuck!"
This past Saturday, January 8th, kids and parents from 350Brooklyn Families and Sunrise Kids, along with adult supporters from 350BK Legislation, Indivisible Nation BK, and New York Communities for Change, rallied outside Senator Schumer's home to insist that he schedule a vote on the Build Back Better Bill. This bill would not only provide money for much needed renewable energy and climate resilience, but it would also support the Child Tax Credit. Interested in some family friendly civic action? Email [email protected] and find out what you can do!
DSA Build or Burn! Rally for the Build Public Renewables Act
Thursday, January 13, 11:00 am, New York Public Library at Bryant Park
Join this Democratic Socialists sponsored rally to urge Governor Hochul to include the Build Public Renewables Act in her 2022 budget. The bill, which is also supported by 350Brooklyn and the Climate Can't Wait Coalition, would allow the publicly-owned New York Power Authority to build and own community solar and other electricity-generating entities—and it would do a lot to push New York toward the 70% renewable electricity goals set by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. RSVP here.
