I got to know John during his time in the Obama administration, and I quickly saw his passion for creating accountable, effective public institutions that make people’s lives better. John is exactly the kind of person we need in elected office. He brings an incredibly important perspective as an educator to the decision-making table at a moment when that has never mattered more.

We just saw in Virginia how much an effective message on education can matter in gubernatorial campaigns, and there’s no one better prepared to win — and lead — on these issues than John. Long before he was a public school teacher or Education Secretary in the Obama administration, John was a kid who faced incredibly difficult struggles. As a young man, he lost both of his parents, acted out in anger, and got kicked out of school. But he found teachers in his community who believed in him and refused to give up on him.

John says they transformed and saved his life. His story is one that is only possible in America — the kind of story we aspire to tell ourselves about what our country can be. John's story represents the promise of progress, as he's running to lead a state where his great-grandfather was formerly enslaved and to make history as Maryland’s first Black governor.

And this deadline is a chance for his campaign to show that his story and message are really resonating with Marylanders and that he has what it takes to win.
