Dear John,
On Sunday, January 9th a 120 unit apartment building in the Tremont neighborhood of the Bronx where many of our Muslim community members reside and call home caught fire. The fire was one of the deadliest fires in New York City's history as 19 people have died and scores more are injured and in critical condition.
MCN's coordinators, Ajifanta Marenah, Kujegi Camara, and Adama Bah are on the ground helping to assist members who have been affected; from locating family members, translating with city and hospital officials, to helping gather resources and items to start life over. They're working with local community groups and city agencies to bring the best possible resources to the families.
Alhamdullilah! With your support already, MCN's campaign has raised over $100,000K in less than 24 hours. Not to mention the supplies and clothing that have been coming in. A big shout out to the Gambian Youth Organization, one of the members of our Muslim Stakeholders Roundtable, for being one of the first responders to this crisis and who has been collecting supplies and serving as a sanctuary for many of the affected families.
There's still time to donate more to this campaign, as families are going to need long-term support to rebuild their lives. Our fundraising campaign will support all affected families:
1) To help find housing
2) Cover immediate monetary needs
3) Cover burial costs
4) Cover hospital bills
