FDA Permanently Lifts In-Person Dispensing Requirement for Medication Abortion

After completing a full review of the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) for mifepristone, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on December 16 that it will permanently lift the requirement that the drug prescribed for medication abortion care be dispensed in person. At the same time, the FDA left other requirements in place and added a requirement that pharmacies that dispense the drug be certified. The lifting of the in-person dispensing requirement is a great first step that will expand access to medication abortion—but more work is needed to ensure that medication abortion care is available to all. 
 

Short-term Funding Extension Approved for the Title X Family Planning Program and the Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) Program 
 

On December 2, Congress passed a short-term spending deal – referred to as a continuing resolution (CR) – to fund the federal government through February 18, 2022, at current levels. Importantly, this averted a shutdown of the federal government, as funding would have expired on December 3 otherwise.
 

This short-term deal includes level funding at $101 million for the evidence-based TPP Program and $286.5 million for the Title X Family Planning Program. But, without a final omnibus appropriations bill for FY 2022, the increases that the House and Senate have proposed for these programs can’t become a reality. That’s why we need you to help us keep up the pressure on Congress.
 

New and Updated State Policy Resources 
 

We recently released contraceptive landscape fact sheets for Indiana and Oregon. You can find all of our state contraceptive landscape fact sheets here. We also updated our brief and infographic on pharmacist prescribing of contraceptive access. With the addition of Delaware, a total of 23 states and DC allow (or will allow) pharmacists to prescribe contraception.
