Learning to live with Covid does not mean doing nothing

mask test jab graphic

We?ve been hearing a lot recently about how we must all learn to live with Covid-19. I know this isn?t where we want to be ? especially as none of us expected to have to continue to cope with the virus so long after our first lockdown. ?

However, it is clear that Covid will be with us for some time as new variants emerge and continue to spread among our neighbourhoods and communities. Learning to live with Covid does not mean we simply accept the virus as a way of life and hope that we don?t catch it. It does not mean ?do nothing?.

There are some important things we must all do if we are to return to something like a ?normal? life:

* *Vaccinate:* You may have heard that the new Omicron variant of Covid is milder than previous variants. This is not true ? it is only milder if you have been vaccinated? and especially if you have had your booster jab. Most people critically ill with Omicron are unvaccinated. You get book yourself a jab here: [link removed] [ [link removed] ]
* *Test:* Take a lateral flow test before you mix with others to be sure you are Covid-free. From tomorrow, if you test positive on a rapid test at home, you can begin your isolation period without having to book a PCR test. If you are double-vaccinated you only need to isolate for seven days if you have a negative test on days six and seven of your isolation. You can find where to pick up test kits here: [link removed] [ [link removed] ] Don?t forget: if you have symptoms, you should still book a PCR test.
* *Take care:* Continue to wear a mask when you are in public indoor spaces, such as shops and public transport. Try to keep shared spaces well-ventilated ? and even meet outside if you can.

If we all play our part, we can keep each other safe while looking with hope to the future.

Contact centre renamed after Nottingham?s ?champion? of children

Helen's place

We?ve officially renamed a family contact centre today in memory of Helen Blackman, who died last year from Covid. Helen was our Director of Children?s Integrated Services and I worked closely with her for a number of years when I was the Council?s Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People. She was an inspirational leader of her department and was recognised nationally for her work ? but above all she cared deeply about children.

Her career spanned more than three decades with both the city and county councils, and she worked tirelessly to improve life chances for young people. I?m proud to have known her and was honoured to attend a ceremony with her family this morning in which a plaque was unveiled at the former Garden Street centre, in Radford, which will now be known as ?Helen?s Place?. January Full Council

Council House

Today was the first Full Council meeting of 2022 and there were a number of important items discussed such as; improvements in Clifton, leisure centres, council finances, vaccinations and levelling up. I also brought a refresh of the Council?s Recovery and Improvement Plan, updating councillors on our progress. Though we are by no means complacent, I am pleased to say that we are meeting many of the key milestones in the plan. Councillors also discussed a motion calling on the Government to take the burden of social care funding away from local council tax payers. Adult social care is the highest area of expenditure for the council and over many years the amount of additional funding from Government has been inadequate and relied too heavily on regressive council tax increases. ?In 2015 the Government introduced the adult social care precept which put up to an additional 3% on council tax bills to pay towards social care services for adults. In the last two years alone that has meant an extra ?89 on council tax bills in Nottingham. I hope this motion will help put pressure on the Government to develop a fair and sustainable national solution to adult social care funding.

Good SEND support in place in Nottingham, say inspectors

School children

Ensuring children with special needs and disabilities have the opportunity to thrive and reach their potential is incredibly important and so I am very pleased with the outcome of a joint inspection into support services for them in Nottingham. A five-day inspection was carried out last November involving speaking to children and young people with SEND, parents and carers, and City Council and local NHS officers. They also visited mainstream and special schools. Inspectors concluded that education, health and social care leaders and professionals share a common ambition for Nottingham to be a truly inclusive place to live.

They found that local leaders were quick to respond to SEND reforms, undertaking significant and timely actions when they were introduced and putting an appropriate strategy in place to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND. This recognises that local leadership have a clear and accurate understanding of services for children with SEND and reflects a strongly inclusive approach across partners.

Congratulations Nottingham Forest Football Club

And finally, congratulations to Nottingham Forest on beating Arsenal last night in the FA Cup. It was a great result and I am wishing all the team good luck ahead of their next match against Leicester in February.
