As we gather to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy this year, it's imperative that we not ignore one of his most deeply held beliefs: that it was both necessary and possible to eliminate poverty and hunger in America.
In his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1964, Dr. King famously said, "I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits."
At Hunger Free America, we commemorate Dr. King's legacy with our annual Serve-A-Thon. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Our 2022 Serve-A-Thon will take place January 15th-17th and will feature both in person and remote service activities, as well as virtual learning workshops, with a focus on the hunger struggles people throughout the country face.
We hope you'll join us.
