Holding the NIMH Accountable
Hello John,

We wanted you to see a message from our founder, Dr. E. Fuller Torrey, about his latest article on the ongoing fight to hold the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) accountable:

"A Danish study reported a correlation between the increasing use of marijuana among young people and an increasing incidence of schizophrenia. When NIMH was asked by the media whether this is also true in the United States, NIMH acknowledged that, except within very broad limits, it really does not know the incidence or prevalence of schizophrenia and therefore has no idea whether or not it is increasing. NIMH should have also acknowledged that it is not doing any research to find answers to these questions.

For the lead federal agency on mental illness research to have no such information on the most serious and most expensive mental illness is extraordinary. Almost every developed country has better data on this question than the United States has. By focusing almost exclusively on basic brain research and ignoring its other responsibilities, NIMH is becoming an embarrassment to National Institutes of Health and to American psychiatry in general."
