John,
After we won our first race in 2018, we dove right back in.
We celebrated Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s upset victory against a powerful corporate Democrat, then we got back to work. We took that momentum and helped elect Jamaal Bowman in 2020, in a district very close to AOC's.
In early 2019, AOC introduced the Green New Deal resolution into Congress and we hustled to find a progressive to challenge incumbent Eliot Engel in NY-16.
Through our candidate nominating process, Jamaal Bowman’s name came in to JD. At the time, Jamaal was an award-winning middle school principal in the Bronx. After interviews, meetings, and a ton of campaign preparation, we helped Jamaal launch his run for Congress in New York’s 16th Congressional District.
We took what we learned from AOC’s race, and the volunteer base who knocked doors and made phone calls for her upset victory, and hit the ground running with Jamaal. We helped build a digital presence for the campaign, spent weeks working alongside local community members and organizers to build a coalition on the ground, and helped find staff and volunteers for the campaign.
We helped Jamaal and his team build a grassroots campaign rooted in communities the incumbent neglected for decades and raised over $2.1 million dollars with an average contribution of $30. JD staff and volunteers helped lead important parts of Jamaal’s field program — from the creation of the field organizing plan to managing the campaign’s GOTV distributed organizing program to helping run massive phone banking and post-card writing campaigns.
Jamaal took down another powerful corporate incumbent, all because of the work we did together. The incumbent had big money behind him, and a ton of last minute smear campaigns against Jamaal, but our grassroots fundraising and organizing prevailed.
We have the chance now to elect 6 more Justice Democrats this year in open seats and against corporate-backed incumbents. We can win with less money but it still takes a wave of grassroots support — folks chipping in $5, $27, or whatever they can afford — to run winning campaigns against the political establishment. And in-person early voting in our first primaries (in Texas) starts in just 36 days.
John, we really need you to chip in today so we can build 2022 campaigns that can defeat corporate incumbents. It’s us vs. Wall Street, fossil fuel executives, and health insurance companies. Can you chip in $2.70, $27, or anything at all today to help us elect 6 working class progressives in 2022?
Thank you so much for your support. I know we can do big things together this year.
In solidarity,
Alexandra Rojas, Executive Director
Justice Democrats
