Every problem caused by today’s unaccountable capitalism hits minority Americans much harder. To turn things around, we need to rewrite the rules. Spend two days with us and let’s get started. Register NOW for the ASBC Sustainable Business & Advocacy Summit: “Making Capitalism Work for All” – Dec. 10-11, 2019 in DC Dear John, It’s an open secret: Today’s capitalist system has succeeded in part because millions of people were not compensated for their labor in the 1700’s and 1800’s. More recent public and corporate policies reduced economic opportunities for black and brown Americans. The outcome of these discriminatory practices has contributed to a significant wealth gap between black and white Americans. And while the Obama Presidency seemed to herald a post-racial era, more recent events certainly have not. What harms any American weakens all of us, and as diversity in America’s society and workforce grows, so does the need for values-based, productive discussions by business and civic leaders and policymakers. To help foster those conversations, ASBC is hosting the Sustainable Business & Advocacy Summit this Dec. 10-11 in D.C. Join us and convene with other leaders to hammer out systemic, policy-based solutions — and take those solutions to Capitol Hill.
One important ASBC Summit session will address How to Talk About Race, Equity and Economic Justice. It offers a space for participants to talk about race, privilege and inclusion in the workplace; and examine the unconscious biases each of us holds. We’ll also discuss what high-road businesses and policymakers can do to have our capitalist system address historic inequities. You’ll hear from Dr. Maya Rockeymoore, policy maven and CEO of Global Policy Solutions; Andy Shallal, social entrepreneur and founder of Busboys and Poets; Darrick Hamilton, executive director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University, Donna Daniels of the RSF Social Finance and Dave Rapaport from Ben & Jerry’s. ASBC board member Maryanne Howland, president of Ibis Communications will moderate. Other sessions feature equally dynamic minority leaders, including Tequila Johnson, VP of The Equity Alliance; Chris Lu, former deputy secretary, U.S. Dept. of Labor under Obama and Clint Odom, Senior VP and executive director of the National Urban League. During the Summit, we’ll also meet on Capitol Hill with members of Congress from both parties — and urge them to support policy changes to make our capitalist economy work for all. Register now and be part of the movement to reinvent capitalism.
