If you’ve been paying any attention to politics lately, you’ve heard a lot of noise about the GQP wanting to install Donald Trump as the Speaker of the House if they retake Congress this year. (I know, I know – just the idea of that makes me want to vomit, too.)
So is this a real threat you and I should be worried about?
The answer is no … but also yes.
See, the thing is, the GQP has no intention of really installing Trump as Speaker, it’s just a ploy to raise money from his die-hard followers.
The problem is, it’s working, and it’s working really, really well.
You heard it yourself just a few weeks ago: Trump threw a fundraiser in Tampa for Republican House candidates where they raised 8 million dollars in a single go. The GQP is raising money in record numbers like we have never seen before. Worse yet, they are raising money in numbers they themselves have never seen before.
I get messages all the time saying, “Richard, are you worried we will lose the House?”
You’re damn right I’m worried.
Look, I hate to be that guy screaming, “Hey, things are really, really bad, so you must pitch in $5 to help us keep the House!” I know people hate those emails; I do too, but we are in a whole new reality here.
The truth is, I’ve been doing this a long time and I have never seen things quite this bad. Democrats can’t even raise enough money to pay staff, while Republicans are throwing multimillion-dollar, lavish fundraisers everywhere they go.
It is time for our party to wake up. I know folks are mad that we are not getting everything we want passed because of a few Senators, but you and I both know things will be a thousand times worse if the Republicans take power.
The Republican vision for America is different from ours. They want guns on every corner, including in our children's classrooms. They want to arm our preschool teachers! Trump himself said it. Is that the vision that you want for America?
The Republicans want to further the income divide in this nation. They only care about a tiny segment of the population, their filthy rich donors, while Democrats want to make sure we can all succeed and prosper, and that the American dream becomes the American reality for everyone.
Republican policies will ensure that the wealthy continue hoarding all the resources and leave the rest of us working 12 or 16 hours a day until the day we die, penniless, with nothing to leave to our kids but more debt.
Social Security, Medicare, and assistance for struggling families will all be stripped if they take control, and for what? So Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk can build more rockets to show off to their newest and youngest girlfriends of the week?
The Republicans want to completely strip women of autonomy over their own bodies, they want to force women into pregnancies even when their lives are in danger, they don't care.
If the GQP gets control of the House in November, you will see multiple impeachment attempts against Biden, used as stall tactics and distractions while they strip away Social Security, dismantle the social safety net, and let COVID run rampant.
We cannot and must not allow them to take over control in the midterms, and the fight for America's soul starts today.
