I witnessed some of the worst moments my patients had to go through in my two decades as a physician — some that stick with me to this day.

Gunshot victims wheeled into the emergency room. Patients who struggled to manage their diabetes because of the cost of insulin or a lack of access to a grocery store in their community. And before passage of the Affordable Care Act, patients turned away by insurance companies because of a preexisting condition like cancer or asthma.

I’m no stranger to tough conversations. As a doctor, we have to be honest with ourselves and our patients about the challenges we’re facing — even when it’s not what we want to hear.

But then, you take action and tackle the problem head on.

After seeing the problems my patients faced every single day, I knew we needed to fix our health care system. I became a public health advocate and worked with the National Physicians Alliance, and we worked with the Obama administration to pass the Affordable Care Act.

They said it couldn’t be done, but with fierce determination and leadership, we got health care for 23 million Americans.

So often when Washington politicians get their hands on a problem, they make it worse. I know how to cut through the noise and deliver for workers and families because I’ve done it all my life — but it’ll take a strong grassroots effort to go up against the GOP’s war chest.
