It is no exaggeration to say that the past five years have showed us we are in immediate danger of losing our democracy.
After shamelessly flouting anti-corruption norms and laws, former President Trump exposed the glaring cracks in our system of checks and balances. Even after January 6, he’s managed to evade any accountability, proving that – for now – presidents can go so far as to incite an insurrection without facing any legal consequences.
We need to make sure that this cannot happen again; we need the Protecting Our Democracy Act.
The lack of consequences for Trump’s actions has created a permission structure that makes corruption acceptable. A long list of Trump allies has refused Congressional subpoenas, creating further obstacles to finding the truth behind the events of January 6 – and preventing it from being repeated.
The Protecting Our Democracy Act is a historic piece of legislation that would be a critical step toward restoring accountability and eliminating corruption, including preventing the abuse of the presidential pardon power and making it harder for the president to interfere with Justice Department investigations.
Norms in a democracy are only as good as our willingness to enforce them. The Protecting Our Democracy Act will give our norms the teeth they need to withstand the threats now facing our democracy.
