Comrade,
Last month’s Rally to Reclaim Rent Control drew over 500 people, including a large DSA contingent. But our work isn’t over. The next step in the fight to expand and strengthen D.C. rent control is right around the corner, and we need to show up.
The D.C. Council has already proposed a re-authorization of rent control that would extend the current, inadequate law for another 10 years. This is not good enough.
We need to let the council know that we won’t stand for the status quo. We've already lost 60,000 of the units originally covered under previous versions of the D.C. rent control law—we can't afford to lose one unit more.
The council is holding a public hearing on this status quo rent control bill next week. Can you testify on why we need stronger rent control for all instead? Sign up here to testify.
Details on the hearing are below:
- What: Testifying at the D.C. Council rent control hearing
- Date: Wednesday, November 13
- Time: 11:00 a.m. to (hopefully!) some time that evening, though you'll only need to be there at the time you're called to testify
- Place: Wilson Building Room 500, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, D.C., 20004
- Sign-up: Link is here
Everyone should testify at this hearing. Rent control affects us all, so we all need to be in this fight. Do you live in a group house or a brand new apartment that wouldn’t be covered under rent control? Or are you a homeowner? Testify anyway! You can learn more about how strong rent control laws build lasting communities for all D.C. residents on the Reclaim Rent Control website.
Everyone who signs up to testify will get the chance to speak or have their testimony read. We want to extend this hearing long into the evening. Let us know if you need a particular time window, and we will do our best to set that up.
We’re also happy to help you craft your testimony. From in-the-weeds policy arguments supporting the decommodification of housing, to a retelling of your own experience with displacement and soaring rents, all testimony will be valuable for the council to hear.
If you have any questions about the hearing or would like help writing your testimony, please email [email protected].
In Solidarity,
Metro D.C. DSA Steering Committee
