Recently, one of our campaign’s endorsers, Howie Klein from Blue America PAC, asked for my thoughts on President Biden getting a primary challenge. Rightfully or wrongfully so, Biden is getting blamed on the left and right for all of our current issues. He hasn’t made anyone happy. And as a result, his administration’s ratings are very low.
Joe Biden’s presidency mimics Jimmy Carter’s presidency on a number of levels. Carter was elected in response to the Watergate scandal; Biden was elected in response to Donald Trump. Popular opinion felt that the Carter administration couldn’t do anything right. Carter was president during a time referred to as "stagflation" - high inflation and low economic growth. Sound familiar?
When it came to Jimmy Carter’s second term, Carter stubbornly decided to pursue re-election. He received a fierce challenge from the left – Ted Kennedy. It was a nasty primary season with the two candidates battling it out until Carter won the nomination. After that, progressive Democrats felt that they weren’t being represented or heard and didn’t vote in the general election. As a result, Republican Ronald Reagan won the presidency, and we all know how that unfortunate story unfolds.
President Biden isn’t showing the same stubbornness as Carter did in running for re-election. There is a good chance he may step aside and be a one-term president. That's the best-case scenario for the Democratic Party so long as the nominee comes from the left of the Party who progressives can rally behind. Thus, our movement has the opportunity to shape President Biden’s decision to run again.
Progressives need to win big in the midterms.
Progressives winning big in the midterms will seal the deal for Biden stepping aside for a fresh face. It’ll prove that we can carry elections and that our small dollar fundraising is paying off by swelling our rankings in a people-powered movement. It will throw old school politics out the door.
