| | Dear John, As you likely recall, our current executive director, Vee Lamneck, announced this summer that they would be leaving EV at the end of the year to pursue a new career as a mental health therapist. Over the past few months, the EV Search Committee, which is comprised of both board and staff, has been hard at work to find someone to fill Vee's big shoes! We were thrilled that over 60 diverse applicants from across the country expressed interest in the position and we've met so many amazing leaders throughout this process. |

| We anticipate that we will be able to announce our new executive director within the next few weeks, and then they will start as soon as their schedule allows. Vee will remain as our executive director until the position is filled, and they have kindly agreed to help out behind the scenes to ensure that this leadership transition goes as smoothly as possible. We're so grateful for all that Vee has done to get us this far, and we're also very excited for our new executive director to officially join the EV team! |

| | LGBTQ Community Survey We have accomplished a lot together the past couple of years, not the least of which is becoming the first state in the South with LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections. While we've come a long way, we know that there's much to be done so that all LGBTQ Virginians can thrive. That's where you come in! We have partnered with Virginia Commonwealth University's Survey and Evaluation Research Laboratory (SERL) to create a survey so that we can hear directly from you. We want to hear about your experiences, which will help us to identify the strengths and areas of growth that could improve the lives of LGBTQ Virginians. This study will help us in our strategic planning process and will inform the future policies we advocate for and the future programs that we will create. We can't do this without you - your feedback is vital to the future of our work. Plus, everyone who completes the survey will have the chance to be entered into a raffle for a new iPad! | Safe Schools Action Network Since the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released their Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools last spring, we have seen mixed responses from school boards across the Commonwealth, ranging from full support to outright condemnation. Unfortunately, getting trans-affirming policies passed in every locality has been anything but easy. And, sadly, some legislators are trying to make it even harder. Senate Bill 20 has already been introduced, which would undermine Title IX and make it much more difficult for school boards to effectively implement federal law. While anti-trans bills like this one are distressing and harmful, we know that the power of community and collective advocacy can, and will, help us defeat these attempts to roll back trans students’ rights. If you want to learn about ways you can take action, receive training and opportunities to share your story, or build relationships with other advocates, come join us! |

| | Lunch & Lobby We know that many Virginians are worried about the future of LGBTQ equality in our Commonwealth. But, rest assured, we aren’t backing down! Even with a less friendly House of Delegates, the Senate remains unchanged. We will work with the Senate's pro-equality majority to act as a crucial back stop against harmful legislation and efforts to weaken our hard-earned wins passed during the last two years. And, we'll need your help to make that happen. Unfortunately, due to the rising Covid-19 cases, we won't be able to host an in-person lobby day. So instead, plan to join us for a virtual Lunch & Lobby event on Tuesday, January 25th from 12:00-1:00pm. This will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about the bills that we're following, plus we'll share ways to make your voice heard. Join us to keep up the fight for LGBTQ equality! |

| New Year Giving We are so grateful for the many year-end gifts that have helped us kick off the new year in a big way! As we wrap up the first week of 2022, there is a lot on the horizon that we're excited about, but there's also a lot of hard work ahead of us. While it will be more challenging to pass pro-equality bills in 2022, we have been here before. We know how to successfully build bipartisan partnerships and mobilize advocates to change hearts and minds. Not only will we fight in the halls of the General Assembly, but we will also continue to support transgender and nonbinary students and evolve our programming to respond to the needs of all LGBTQ Virginians. If you haven’t already, you can donate below or increase your impact by becoming a monthly supporter! With your help, we can't wait to see what we accomplish in 2022. |
