Hey Indivisibles,

It might be a new year, but our goal for passing democracy reform remains the same. We are focused (and closer than ever) on passing two critical democracy reform bills: the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (sometimes called “the VRA”), and the Freedom to Vote Act.

The Freedom to Vote Act would override some of the worst anti-democratic bills that have already passed at the state level over the past few years, and the VRA would prevent bills like this from going into effect in the first place. That’s why we need both of these bills to pass as soon as possible.

Last year, Senate Republicans consistently used the filibuster to block both of these bills from even reaching the floor.

Despite popular support for both of these bills, the filibuster has so far prevented their passage. The good news is that Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has set out a firm deadline of January 17 – MLK Day – to take a vote on reforming the filibuster so that we can get these critical democracy reform bills across the finish line. On Monday, Senator Schumer sent out another dear colleague letter where he reiterated that even though he would like Republicans to work with the Democrats on the issue of democracy reform, he is fully prepared for Senate Democrats to go it alone to protect the foundation of our democracy: the right to vote.

This deadline is the clearest signal we’ve had that this long-awaited vote is FINALLY coming – and we cannot get to the finish line without you!

We must eliminate the filibuster to save our democracy. That is why we are urging you today to call your Senators and let them know you want them to eliminate the filibuster to pass much-needed democracy reform – there’s no time to waste! We know that those of us who want to protect and expand the people’s rights to participate are in the majority, and what we are fighting for is right. This is not a partisan issue, and all Americans should have access to fair elections.

We cannot continue to let Republicans hold our democracy hostage.

The fight for democracy reform has been a long one, and we couldn’t do it without you. With your continued support, we will continue to make great strides towards progress in the House and Senate. Thank you for always staying in this fight with us.
