Run for Something

Hi there! I'd like to tell you a little bit about Safiya, Tay, and Ali.

Safiya Khalid won a seat on the Lewiston City Council in Maine on Tuesday night; when she's sworn in, she'll become the first Somali-American to hold the office. In the weeks leading up to her election, Safiya was harassed by tens of thousands of racist trolls online. She didn’t let it get to her; she just deleted her accounts and kept knocking doors. She had a hunch (and was right!) that no online hate can beat a person-to-person relationship.

Tay Anderson became the youngest person in the history of Colorado to seek public office in 2017 when he ran for school board. He lost that race, but on Tuesday night, Tay ran for Denver School Board At-Large and won. "I have lived through the failed policies of Denver Public Schools as a student and now as an educator," Tay says. Now he'll have the power to make Denver schools better for thousands of students and teachers.

Ali Brown won a seat on the Indianapolis City County Council on Tuesday. In addition to running as a progressive in a "red" state, Ali overcame egregious homophobic advertisements run against her by her opponent. The day after her victory, Ali tweeted that she'd be spending the day caring for her sick toddler -- because in addition to being a Councilwoman-Elect, she's also a mom.

We are so, so fucking proud to be on the team of candidates like these, who knew they weren't going to have an easy time of it and decided to take on these challenges anyway. Their communities are lucky to have them in office, and we're lucky to have worked with them.

If you're ready to do it all again in 2020, you know where you can donate right now:
