John – one year ago yesterday, a mob of insurrectionists attacked our Capitol in a violent effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
The day’s deadly events made it all too clear that we cannot take our democracy for granted. And since that horrific afternoon, power-hungry, partisan operatives in this country have only become more emboldened and authoritarian – working in states to deny voters their rights and give self-interested politicians the power to overturn legitimate elections.
This isn’t just another political fight – the future of our democracy hangs in the balance. It’s time for every senator who still believes that we should have free and fair elections to act.
Sign the Petition: Urge key senators to fix the filibuster and put a stop to the far right’s brazen attacks on our democracy >>
Passing both the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is the single most important thing that the Senate can do right now to strengthen democracy and defend the freedom to vote.
Together, these bills would protect eligible voters' right to be heard, thwart efforts to sabotage or overturn elections, limit Big Money’s stranglehold on our elections, help end gerrymandering, and so much more.
But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell seems to care more about protecting his own power than preserving our democracy and is abusing the filibuster to block these bills. We can’t let this outdated rule – which has been amended many times before – be the reason our democracy crumbles.
Add your name if you agree: the Senate must fix the filibuster immediately and vote to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
John, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has announced that the Senate will debate and consider fixing the filibuster as soon as this month – so our elected officials need to hear from us now.
I hope you’ll speak out today,
