Dear John,
Last week, I was sworn in as your New York City Comptroller in a small ceremony with my family. It was not the inauguration that any of us pictured, but getting to do it from the cupola on top of the Municipal Building was a nice way to make a small, COVID-safe event feel pretty special.
As I start my new role, the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly through our city, threatening the health and prosperity of our communities. We are leaning into the hybrid workplace, getting tested regularly and wearing high quality masks in the office, and allowing staff to work remotely as needed to ensure everyone’s safety during this wave of the virus.
Here’s some of what I’ve been working on this week:
- Finalizing and announcing my full leadership hires! Read more about this first-rate team here.
- Working through and responding to the property tax commission report. With the 421- a property tax exemption program expiring this year, we have a real opportunity to achieve comprehensive, fair, and efficient property tax reform. This program has long been an obscenely excessive giveaway to developers masquerading as an affordable housing program. See my full response here.
- Attending my first two official pension trustee meetings to discuss how we will work together to safeguard the retirement security of our teachers and police officers.
- Meeting with nonprofit and agency leaders to discuss how to reform city contracting to get the organizations that feed our seniors, care for our children, shelter our neighbors, and provide critical services paid on time.
- Calling on corporations to play their part in defending our democracy. Read my response to the anniversary of the January 6 insurrection here.
It’s been an incredible first week — getting to know the staff, sinking my teeth into the numbers, and planning some of the critical work ahead to help make city government work better. We have an opportunity to create real, meaningful change through the office of the Comptroller, and I couldn’t be more grateful to be your partner in it.
With hope,
Brad
