Dear John,

The right to vote is vital to our democracy—and key to building justice and shared well-being for all in every way. That right has historically been denied to many to preserve the power of a few. And today, it is again in jeopardy.

Across the country, we’re seeing tactics deployed to weaken the power of communities of color and others. Several states have passed laws to suppress the vote. Other measures enable politically motivated state officials or bodies to override votes entirely. Legislation to set national standards to protect voting rights is stalled in the Senate, but we must pass it now—before it is too late.

AFSC has teamed up with Daily Kos and other partners on a petition calling for immediate action. Will you join us?

Sign the petition to the U.S. Senate: Do everything you can to protect our freedom to vote! [link removed]

The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act have been introduced in Congress. These measures would set national standards to increase access to the ballot box, neutralize partisan and racial gerrymandering, and protect our elections from interference. They would also increase transparency in campaign finance and more.

Right now, a Jim Crow relic stands in the way of a vote on these bills: the filibuster. The Senate has made carve-outs to the filibuster before—as recently as 2021—in order to pass essential legislation. Now we need them to do so again.

Please join us in urging the Senate do everything they can to protect our freedom to vote. [link removed]

Free and fair elections are vital to delivering the more just and peaceful world we all seek. I hope you will join us in urging your senators to do everything possible to preserve our democracy and advance these fundamental protections.

In peace,

Aura Kanegis
