Friend,
A year after a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in a deadly attack, Republicans in Congress are still embracing insurrectionists, attacking our democracy, and spreading hateful rhetoric.
They’ve targeted Rashida and the squad with Islamophobia and racism, even threatening their lives and inciting death threats. All without accountability from GOP leadership—which shows millions of people in the U.S. that hate-fueled violence is acceptable not only in Congress but in any workplace.
When members of Congress fear for their lives, who is safe? Certainly not Indigenous, Black, or brown communities, who are already targeted by the police and have endured years of trauma just for being who they are.
What we’ve seen in Congress normalizes and fuels the hate that’s inflicted on marginalized people across the country every single day.
And that’s why it’s so important to have leaders like Rashida, who is fighting for our lives and our democracy. She isn’t backing down in the face of hate; instead, she’s showing that marginalized people belong in our country and in the halls of power.
Her very existence disrupts the status quo, but so does her hard work for change.
A leader in the fight to impeach Trump since day one in Congress, Rashida pushed back against Democratic leaders’ attempts to delay and avoid holding Trump accountable. They said it was politically impossible, but she worked with grassroots movements to shift what was possible in order to do what was right.
Rashida knows it’s essential to hold not only individuals accountable, but institutions as well. That’s how we can dismantle white supremacy and injustice while building safer communities where we all thrive.
Can you chip in to Rashida’s re-election campaign today so she can keep fighting for our lives and our democracy in Congress?
After January 6th 2021, Rashida led members of Congress to send a message to congressional leadership, opposing any expansion of our national security powers or laws around domestic terrorism.
Because of our country’s inherent injustices and racist law enforcement, any expansion of surveillance or national security powers would be used to profile and target already-over-policed religious minorities and Black, brown, and Indigenous communities. This would further undermine our democracy and erode our human and civil rights.
Understanding complex and intertwined systems of oppression, Rashida makes sure that our actions move us closer to justice and dignity for all.
And that means taking this growing threat seriously.
Remember: Many participants in January 6th’s mob came prepared to hurt and kill elected officials. And before that, in Rashida’s home state of Michigan, armed protesters (egged on by Trump) stormed into the state Capitol and intimidated lawmakers in response to statewide COVID orders. Then, some of these same men were caught plotting to kidnap and kill Michigan’s Governor.
We saw back in November 2020 how armed right-wingers intimidated and threatened nonpartisan election administrators. We can expect the same in future elections, and it hasn’t even stopped. Election administrators, who do the essential work of conducting our elections and ensuring that our votes are counted, are still receiving violent threats. Last year, one in three election officials reported that they do not feel safe doing their jobs.
Clearly, we need an overhaul before 2022’s midterm elections, to protect election integrity and people’s safety.
The House of Representatives passed legislation to protect and expand voting rights and to support election administrators, but Republicans in the Senate (who do not represent the majority of people in this country) have blocked these necessary laws from passing. Meanwhile, Democrats have not yet gotten rid of the filibuster in order to be able to pass laws through the Senate and onto the President’s desk.
Throughout last year, when Democrats held power in the White House and Congress, Democrats in leadership did not rise to the urgency of this moment.
Record-breaking numbers of people turned out to vote in the middle of a pandemic because they saw that this was our chance to stop encroaching fascism and to ensure our government actually works for the people. But the Democratic Party has so far failed them—and Democrats might lose this year’s midterm elections because of it.
So as we fight for our rights, our lives, and our system of democracy in the year ahead, we need Rashida’s voice and bold leadership more than ever.
Will you chip in today so Rashida can maximize this moment and ensure our government works for all of us?
