It’s 2022 — not 1922, yet women still don’t have equal rights under the Constitution.
That’s simply unacceptable. And it’s time for that to change.
That’s why this week, Aaron and his team sought to persuade a federal appeals court to revive a lawsuit urging the federal government to add the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the Constitution. As Attorney General, Aaron will never stop fighting until the ERA is recognized as the law of the land.
As of this year, the ERA has been ratified by 38 states, putting it at the three-quarters’ threshold required by the Constitution. It amends the Constitution to guarantee that “equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex.”
Folks, equal treatment under the law is one of our highest ideals, and yet, it’s not guaranteed on the basis of sex. It’s our chance to start to make amends for historical injustices, and move toward a more just and equal society. And if we ratify the ERA, it would provide a strong legal defense against a rollback of the significant advances in women's rights that have been achieved.
In 2017, Nevada became the first state since 1977 to ratify the ERA, setting a trend that has been followed by Illinois and Virginia. It reflects our values. And it should now be the law of the land.
Aaron has proven that he will never stop fighting for equality for everyone. Will you chip in today to show him you have his back?
