Hi, John. A week into the new year, I am feeling very grateful for the family that has shaped me into who I am today. My parents and the generations before them paved the way for me to serve in Congress and now run against Sen. Chuck Grassley (R) so we can do better for Iowa's working families in the Senate.

In the photo below is one of those family members, my great-grandmother Agnes. She was born in 1906, 14 years before women would gain the right to vote. When I was 25, I walked up my street – right past her house – to my polling place, where I cast a ballot with my name on it for an Iowa State House primary. I thought about Agnes when I dropped off my ballot, and I still think about her every time I go to the polls.

Those before us have rallied, protested and spoken out for what is right. It's their sacrifices and commitment that have enabled us to come so far. But even after centuries of advocacy and progress, the sad truth is that the right to vote is still under attack in this country – and you need only look as far as Sen. Grassley to see that. He filibustered the Freedom to Vote Act to ensure Republican-led voter suppression continues across the country.

I'm running to defeat Sen. Grassley because Iowans today and of future generations are counting on us, here and now, to protect our democracy.

So that's why I'm emailing you today. If you believe that we need to fight for our right to vote and that we need to protect our Senate majority – then I need you on my team. Please, can you donate $5 to my campaign so I have the resources to defeat Sen. Grassley? In a race like this, every dollar and every grassroots donor makes a real difference.
