The
UK’s largest lion sculpture has taken up residence at Millennium Green in
London’s Waterloo for three months and YOU are invited to be part of the pride.
Come and admire the amazing artwork of world-famous artists Gillie and Marc,
then take a selfie and share with hashtags #LoveTheLast, #BornFreeForever or
#ForeverLions.
You’ll
discover each lion has a special affinity with Born
Free, from the showstopper centrepiece of Elsa the lioness – our charity’s
original inspiration, returned to the wild by George and Joy Adamson – to
internet sensation Christian, bought in Harrods, released in Kenya, before his
famous reunion with his previous owners. From individuals you helped us rescue
from the pet trade, circus and trophy hunting, to those you help keep safe in
the wild, each sculpture helps represent the many threats lions face today.
Launched by our Co-Founders Virginia McKenna OBE and Will Travers OBE, with Patrons Gaby Roslin, Sally Gunnell OBE and Lauren St John, the incredible installation kicks off Born Free’s Year of the Lion – in what would have been the 100th Birthday year of our fearless Co-Founder Bill Travers MBE. A true lionheart.
Since the 1960s, when the film Born Free was made, wild lions have declined by 90% from some 200,000 to as few as 20,000 today. Africa without wild lions? Extinction in the wild a real possibility? We can’t let this happen! This unique artwork plays a vital role in helping ensure a future for lions.
Every single pound we raise will fund our battle to keep these ultimate predators safe in the wild, end trophy hunting and fight captive exploitation. Your gift today will help ensure a future for this iconic species.
