JANUARY 2022

In Memoriam: Remembering Those We Lost in 2021

Sanctuary work is equal parts love and loss. Every year, we welcome new rescues through our doors and celebrate each milestone they reach. But in many ways, our rescued friends never truly escape our country's unjust food system.

Farm animals are bred for increased growth and productivity-far more than what is natural for their bodies. There's no consideration or expectation of a life beyond their slaughter date. As such, their bodies wear out, often faster than they should. While we can improve their longevity and quality of life, we cannot reverse the damage already caused by breeding and exploitation.

We're grateful for every day, week, month, and year that these survivors have at Sanctuary. But it's also hard to say goodbye to those we love-especially when they should have had more time. Please join us in honoring the animals who passed away this year.

From the Slammer to Sanctuary: Jailbird Ducklings Get a Second Chance

In the deep of winter, a case of "fowl play" landed four ducklings in jail. A lone box appeared one night by a dumpster at a New York correctional facility. In it: four baby ducklings. It's unclear if the person who left them hoping for a safe haven or simply throwing them away. Either way, they were alone-and likely wouldn't survive without help.
