Hello —

One year ago today, as members of Congress were working to faithfully carry out our constitutional duty to certify the results of the 2020 election, we witnessed a disgraceful, violent attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Incited by misinformation and hate from the highest office, right-wing insurrectionists stormed the Capitol in an attempt to subvert our democracy and overturn the will of the people. It was a tragic and unprecedented day for our nation — one that I’ll never forget.

As we solemnly remember the events that took place one year ago, I’m incredibly grateful to those who stood up to protect our democracy and defend the Constitution. And I’m proud that democracy prevailed that day, as Congress reconvened later that evening to fulfill our constitutional duty by certifying the results of the election, and carrying out the will of the people.

But one year later, it’s clear that the fight to protect our democracy is far from over.

In 2021, more than 400 voter suppression laws were introduced in state legislatures across the nation. Republican-led state houses gerrymandered legislative districts to their own political liking. And in the Senate, Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have abused the filibuster time and again to prevent Congress from taking action to protect and strengthen our democracy.

Well, the people of Wisconsin didn’t send me to Congress to sit on the sidelines while Republicans attack our fundamental right to vote. So I’ll continue doing everything in my power to protect your right to vote, uphold the will of the American people, and strengthen our democracy.

Our fight ahead won’t be easy, but if we continue to raise our voices together, I know democracy will prevail once more.

Together,

Tammy
