One year ago, Republican leaders incited a deadly attack at the Capitol to
try to overturn the results of our election.

But the attack on our democracy didn’t end on January 6. In the year since
the insurrection at the Capitol, fascism has attacked our school boards,
state legislatures, voting laws, and more.

We can only save our democracy by participating in it, so here are 3
things you can do today to protect our voting rights and fight fascism.

Get to know your local officials and vote

At least seven insurrectionists who were at the Capitol on January 6 have
since won public office.^1 They were elected to state legislatures and
city councils in Virginia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Idaho.

Do you know who represents you in the state legislature? City Council?
School Board? Elections Commission? Find out, register to vote, and mark
the election date on your calendar. Start by going to [ [link removed] ]iwillvote.com.

Help protect voting rights

19 states have passed 33 laws to make it harder to vote.^2 And, many
election officials who refused to bend to pressure from Trump have been
pushed out of power and replaced by people who openly say the last
election was fraudulent.

There’s a bill in Congress right now that would address some of these
antidemocratic reforms, but Republicans refuse to support it.

[ [link removed] ]Please call your senators and ask them to support eliminating or
reforming the filibuster so that this desperately needed voting rights
legislation can pass with the support of the Democratic-majority in the
Senate.

Show up at your local meetings

With so much national scrutiny, extremist groups went local. There are
dozens of new local Proud Boys chapters and other extremist groups in
places from Seattle to Philadelphia and beyond.

They are now showing up at school board meetings, public health boards,
and PTA’s to protest mask mandates, school curriculum, and more. So, we
need to show up too.

Find out when your school board meets publicly and put a reminder on your
calendar to check the agenda the day before. If there’s an issue you care
about up for debate, show up and tell your fellow parents.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

To build the future that we want, it requires showing up and
participating. A free and fair democracy where the will of the people
prevails is required in order to build a government for and by the people
– and to achieve our priorities for working people.

All of our actions added together will help to combat the rise of fascism
and ensure that our democracy endures.

In solidarity,

Team AOC
