Friend,

A year ago today, a violent mob – incited by our former president – stormed the Capitol in an horrifying attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

It was a terrible day, as we witnessed our fellow Americans attack the very citadel of our democracy while gleefully waving the Confederate battle flag and even sporting Nazi emblems.

Yet, as somber as today feels, we cannot allow this unthinkable event to be buried. It was not a bad dream. As the January 6th attack on the capitol proved, our democracy is fragile. It must be all of our responsibility to protect and care for it.

Earlier today, I spoke on the Senate floor to mark this sorrowful occasion. I took a moment to remember the heroes of the day, including the brave Capitol Police officers, members of the Metropolitan Police Department, many from federal law enforcement agencies who rushed to the Capitol, and also members of the National Guard. Many of them suffered serious injuries and some even lost their lives.

Because of their sacrifice, my colleagues and I were able to reconvene and certify the confirmed results of the election that evening, thus fulfilling our Constitutional duties and completing the transfer of power to President Joe Biden. Our democracy came under assault yet withstood the attack and with the resolve of many our democracy stood strong.

In my remarks, I also called on my colleagues in the Senate to not allow the horrific events of this day to be erased. As we continue to witness the poisonous fallout of that wretched day, we must continue to spotlight the truth of what happened. It is the only way to safeguard our democracy for future generations. Additionally, I will soon be speaking on the Senate floor about the need to take immediate and urgent action to protect voting rights. It is another crucial way in which we can defend our democracy from those who would attack it, whether through violence or the slow erosion of our most important institutions.

For now, let us remember, and let us forever mark this day in history.
