** This week I stood with the workers of Coffee Tree Roasters

On Wednesday, December 22nd, employees at Coffee Tree Roasters took an important step towards creating a just and sustainable work environment by announcing their intent to form a union with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). Unfortunately, the company retaliated by firing Liam Tinker, a worker who spoke in favor of unionizing in a video announcing their decision. This act is illegal, and the company should reconsider its termination of Liam Tinker.

My colleagues and I immediately drafted a letter to express our concern ([link removed]) over the recent news exposing anti-worker practices. On Wednesday, we stood beside these workers as they shared their stories on the importance of their campaign. We listened as Liam spoke about his unjust firing and the conditions Liam experienced being paid only $9 per hour. We heard the workers' demands, including the ability to receive tips electronically, paid sick time, guaranteed meal/rest breaks, and communication with management. We saw solidarity from the broader community, and the speakers reminded us again that Pittsburgh is a union town.
As a former barista, I sympathize with these workers. I know from personal experience how it feels to depend on tips financially and how demanding working in the service industry sector can be. I proudly stand with Liam, Helene, Jordie, and all of the Coffee Tree workers currently organizing. All workers deserve fair wages and the right to organize for better working conditions.
