Team,

A year ago today, I was trapped in the U.S. Capitol. My colleagues and I were there to do the job Americans sent us to do — ensure a peaceful transfer of power through a free and fair election. Instead, we called our loved ones, thinking it was the last time.

Brave officers put their lives on the line for our democracy. They still carry the scars, seen and unseen, of that day. As a violent mob attacked our Capitol, I entered a mindset I hadn’t been in since my time as an Army Ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan. I was ready to do anything necessary to protect this country, not from foreign enemies like I did overseas, but from home-grown terrorists.

The January 6th insurrectionists were white supremacists. Plain and simple.

Members of both parties experienced the vicious outcome of President Trump’s campaign to overturn the 2020 election. However, 147 lawmakers voted not to accept the election result, thereby breathing new life into Trump’s Big Lie.

That day, we realized we needed to respond to this threat with a commitment to a new type of American patriotism, one rooted in humility that recognizes our faults, commitment to the truth, and dedication to service.

American democracy is not inevitable. It exists because Americans throughout history stood up and fought for it. We could have lost it last year to authoritarian rule. This year we must renew our dedication to save and strengthen it.
