Hi John,
One year ago, a mob of extremists stormed the Capitol hoping to overturn our democratic process. They erected gallows, attacked Capitol Police officers, and chanted “Hang Mike Pence” as they searched the halls for Members of Congress.
A few hours later I walked down those hallways to vote to certify the election. I saw with my own eyes the shattered glass and exhausted Capitol Police officers who had spent the day keeping me, my team and our colleagues safe. I didn’t know then that we’d go on to lose multiple officers to the wounds and trauma of that day. It still hurts to think about it.
And all of this occurred because Donald Trump’s ego decided the Big Lie was more important than our democracy. But he didn’t do this alone. 147 Republican Members of Congress went right along with his plan, voting against certifying the election while being cheered on by far-right extremists.
And here’s the scariest thing – in the year since January 6th, 2021, that group of extremists has only gained more traction and support around the country. There are a record number of QAnon supporters running for office, and conspiracy theories are multiplying at an even faster rate. The extremists are getting savvier, and it’s working.
I had no idea when I ran in 2018 that my time would be spent defending our democracy from misinformation and hatred, but we find ourselves in incredibly challenging times. I write this recognizing I stand on an important precipice – my job is to fight for our ideals and make sure we do not hand control of Congress over to these extremists.
On this tragic one-year anniversary, I have never been more motivated to do that job.
Today my team and I will be taking some time to reflect on last year’s attack. And we’ll also take the time to be incredibly grateful we get to do this important work. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to hold this seat and this great responsibility.
Please stay safe and healthy.
