Winter weather safety reminders

Winter has arrived in Oswego, including weather forecasts with extended periods below freezing and more snow. Here are a few reminders for winter safety, both inside the home and out:

  • Locate and insulate pipes most susceptible to freezing, including those near outer walls, in crawl spaces and attics. Keep cabinet doors open to allow heat to access pipes.
  • Make sure you know how to shut off the water in case a pipe bursts.
  • Prepare a Winter Storm Survival Kit and carry it in your vehicle. Include items such as a first-aid kit, blankets, flashlights, water, non-perishable food, shovel, and booster cables.
  • Be cautious when using alternative heat, including fire places and wood stoves. Use appropriate safe guards and ensure proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Never use a gas range or over for heating, and ensure your home has operating CO detectors.
  • Be careful shoveling snow. Wear appropriate attire, stay hydrated and take frequent breaks. Only move small amounts of snow with each pass to avoid straining.
  • Know local warming shelters in the event you lose heat, or otherwise need a safe, warm place to stay during extreme temperatures. A list of Kendall County locations is available here.
